I decided to reread Emily Wilson’s Odyssey before I consider seeing the movie and then start again decided well why not read her Illiad first because my eyes are always bigger than my plate.
I never thought I’d fall into a list
of men and ships until I read Emily Wilson.
I dreaded Book Two for a moment
that catalog like the begats until
I read it aloud with an imaginary lyre
after a quick study of pronunciations,
those crowded vowels and consonants
of names gathered on that sandy shore
clashing musically like golden sun on
loud bronze under the hammers of war.
I haven’t been this smitten by sound
since Raeburn Miller cursed me
with a passion for Wallace Stevens
and Wilson is not helping me one bit.
